At judges check-in I was told that I had been randomly selected to be a Table Captain and when I told them I didn't want to be a Table Captain they informed me that I wouldn't be needed that day. Can they do that?
What you aren't stating is that you signed up with a Judging Preference of Either. A Judging Preference of Either means that you are willing to either be a Judge or a Table Captain. If you aren't willing to be a Table Captain don't sign up with a Judging Preference of Either. Because Judging Preference is one of the weighting-factors a Judging Preference of Either moves you ahead of others on the list. At an event when additional Table Captains are needed they are randomly selected from the list of judges who signed up with a Judging Preference of Either. At that point all of the judging seats have been filled, what is needed is a Table Captain and if you refuse to be a Table Captain then you aren't needed.
